Description
Terence Lee — A Maverick in Hong Kong’s Art Scene
Terence Lee is a singular figure in Hong Kong’s art world. His creations arise from the heart, unconstrained by medium. Over the past forty years, he has moved fluidly between Eastern and Western cultures, realism and abstraction, two-dimensional and three-dimensional forms—yet his style remains unmistakably his own. Across different periods, he has returned to recurring themes that reflect his faith, his inspirations, and his muses. His fearless exploration, his embrace of imperfection, his reverence for nature’s power, his steadfast beliefs, and his hope for life have all been the driving forces behind his art.
This exhibition, “Disharmony in Harmony”, is a dialogue across time with his 1984 solo show “Harmony amidst Discordance”, held in the very same venue at the Hong Kong Arts Centre. Back then, having just returned from studying ceramics and painting in the United States, his father organised the exhibition at the Pao Galleries on the fifth floor. Forty years later, Terence is no longer the fledgling artist seeking harmony within dissonance. Instead, he creates harmony with ease and clarity; but beneath that beauty lies the same uncompromising spirit of the rebellious youth.
This exhibition is but a semicolon in his artistic journey, a moment to reflect on four decades of creation and to rediscover this extraordinary figure in Hong Kong’s art landscape.
