On 29 June 2025, the Hong Kong Maritime Museum (HKMM) will open its doors for free admission to celebrate the Day of the Seafarer, an occasion dedicated to raising public awareness and honouring the invaluable contributions of seafarers worldwide. A series of engaging activities and souvenirs will be available for children and families, providing a unique opportunity to learn more about the maritime industry and the rich maritime history of Hong Kong. Highlights include game booths, a photo booth, a tattoo sticker experience, guided docent tours, and a simulator experience designed specifically for children. This year, we have specially prepared activities to enhance the visitor experience, such as the “Seafarer's Human Library: The pulse of young seafarers” and “Ocean Embrace– A Wellness Journey through Music & Imagery”.
The Day of the Seafarer, established by the International Maritime Organization in 2010, aims to raise awareness of the essential work of seafarers in supporting international maritime trade and global economic development. The 2025 theme, "My Harassment-Free Ship," emphasizes the importance of fostering a culture of respect and zero tolerance for bullying and harassment at sea. The Pacific Basin Family Fun Day will reflect the spirit of cooperation and mutual respect among seafarers, providing both children and adults with a deeper understanding of the values and significance of the shipping industry in a joyful atmosphere. Through a variety of activities, we aim to raise public awareness of the maritime world and encourage collective efforts towards enhancing the sustainability of global shipping.
Sponsored by Hong Kong-based Pacific Basin Shipping, one of the world’s leading owners and operators of modern Handysize and Supramax dry bulk vessels, this event has received support from multiple collaborating organizations, including the Hong Kong Seamen’s Union, Hong Kong Sea School, Marine Port District, Maritime Professional Promotion Federation, Maritime Services Training Institute, Hong Kong Sea Cadet Corps, and Hong Kong Polytechnic University. This collaboration underscores our partners’ shared commitment to honouring seafarers and extending maritime knowledge to the public.
Notable events include the “Seafarer's Human Library: The pulse of young seafarers”, where young seafarers from Pacific Basin will share details about their work, life on board, and interesting experiences with the audience in an interactive way. In addition, officers will also share their job duties and experience outside of seafaring to give the public a better understanding of the maritime industry and its career orientation. Additionally, “Ocean Embrace– A Wellness Journey through Music & Imagery” will offer a serene experience, featuring students from The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts’ Composition & Electronic Music Department, who will guide attendees through a moment of reflection and relaxation inspired by the ocean’s beauty.
In addition to these fun activities, visitors can take the opportunity to explore the newly unveiled Swire Marine Discovery Centre Marine Science Gallery at A Deck. Through immersive and interactive exhibits, vibrant marine life photographs, and informative research and conservation programmes from current marine conservation initiatives in Hong Kong, visitors will gain insights into the beauty and importance of marine life in Hong Kong's waters. This gallery aims to enhance awareness of the impacts of human activity on the marine environment and showcase ongoing initiatives to sustain and conserve local marine biodiversity.
Join us at the HKMM on 29 June 2025 to celebrate seafarers and explore the wonders of the maritime world!
